Why are Antioxidants so Important?12/16/18
Working out for mostly everyone is awesome. It is addictive and fulfilling on numerous levels. It helps manage stress levels and gives us something to do that is actually good for us as opposed to wasting time. As we get older, working out becomes more and more important.
With anything great (like working out), there are some side effects that come along that we should be aware of that take place in the body. There is more than meets the eye with the body on the inside, which means you need to be diligent in keeping it healthy and able to fight against things that can harm it.
Antioxidants are vital when it comes to keeping the body healthy. Believe it or not, working out actually raises the need for antioxidants in the body. This increase in oxygen causes an increase in free radicals, which damage cells and cause muscular fatigue. The body uses antioxidants that are found in the body to help reduce the free radical damage. The good side of this story is that evidence shows that exercising strengthens the body's antioxidant defense system.
There are numerous things we can do to help out with getting antioxidants. Eating foods that are high in certain vitamins like C and E are important. Many of these foods are colorful fruits and veggies. Looking for foods that are blue, orange, and purple can really help out with antioxidant consumption and supply. Red foods as well are amazing such as strawberries, cranberries, and pomegranate are very high in minerals, vitamins, and organic compounds like Vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus. These help as antioxidants and in treatment with certain conditions such as anemia, indigestion, constipation, kidney disorders, cancer, and heart disease.
