It’s not as sexy of a topic or supplement category as, say, pre-workout supplements, protein powders, or weight loss aids. However, if your joints aren’t operating smoothly, your ability to exercise consistently, let alone get the results you’re seeking, is severely compromised.

Given just how important joint health is, we’ve created a convenient, one-a-day joint health supplement solution in 1UP Joint Health Plus.

1UP Joint Health Plus Ingredients

NEM (Natural Eggshell Membrane)

Natural Eggshell Membrane is a collection of naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans, proteins, and other key nutrients, including:

  • Type I Collagen
  • Glucosamine
  • Chondroitin
  • Hyaluronic acid

These nutrients provide essential buildings that support your body’s ability to maintain healthy joint and connective tissues. NEM may also help to reduce pain and stiffness.

Human studies indicate that NEM supplementation may offer benefits in pain reduction both over the short-term (in as little as seven days) as well as with continual use (30 days).[1,2,3]

More recent research suggests that NEM supplementation may help reduce feelings of discomfort and improve daily functioning.[4]

Curcumin

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is an important Ayurvedic herb that’s widely recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.[5] It comes as little surprise then that curcumin-based supplements have gained popularity with individuals seeking a natural means to support healthy joints.

While turmeric contains a vast array of bioactive compounds, the primary one studied by researchers is curcumin. Research has demonstrated that curcumin supplementation favorably influences a variety of signaling pathways and mediators, which may help reduce joint pain, promote a healthy inflammatory response, and improve joint function.[6,7]

KollaGen II-xs

Type II Collagen is a major component of joint cartilage. While our bodies can naturally produce collagen, this ability declines with age. On top of that, our collective dietary habits don’t contain a lot of collagen-rich foods.

KollaGen II-xs provides a source of bioavailable type II collagen that supports joint comfort and function.[8]

Researcher demonstrates that KollaGen II-xs is readily absorbed by the body, accumulates in cartilage, and stimulates chondrocyte metabolism. This results in superior joint health support.

ParActin

Andrographolide is a fascinating phytochemical found in the leaves ofandrographis paniculata. Specifically, andrographolide has been noted to interfere specifically with NFkB, which helps to reduce the expression of several proinflammatory genes, including COX-2, IL-6, IL-1ß.[9]

Human studies note that supplementing with ParActin may help reduce in pain, stiffness, and fatigue while improving function.[9]

Previous studies note that supplementation with andrographis paniculata extract also was found to help reduce stiffness, fatigue, and pain in adults with rheumatoid arthritis.[10]

Boswellia Serrata Extract

Boswellia (aka Indian Frankincense) extract has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for inflammation as well as a number of other conditions.

Researchers have identified a family of phytochemicals known as boswellic acids that are responsible for Boswellia's soothing qualities. Specifically, boswellic acids support reductions in inflammatory pathways, decreases in pro-inflammatory mediators, and reductions in the levels of matrix protein-degrading enzymes in the synovial fluid in the joints, thus reducing damage to cartilage in patients with osteoarthritis. Collectively, these functions help to reduce pain and swelling while increasing flexibility and motility.

Scientific research indicates that Boswellia Serrata’s anti-inflammatory activities may help reduce feelings of joint pain as well as improve joint function and mobility.[11,12]

However, not all Boswellia Serrata supplements are equal as there are many different standardizations available. Moreover, many cheap boswellia supplements don’t include sufficient levels of active ingredients to deliver results.

This is why 1UP Joint Health Plus includes a premium-grade boswellia extract standardized to 65% boswellic acids.

Ginger Root

A relative of turmeric, ginger is another popular cooking spice renowned for its soothing properties. The root contains multiple bioactives, including gingerols, shogaols, zingerone, and paradol, which have been found to offer anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting[13]:

  • COX-1 and COX-2
  • nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)
  • 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX)

Additionally, a 2015 research review documented that ginger supplementation may reduce to pain from eccentric resistance exercise and prolonged running.[14] This means that ginger may also help to promote post-workout recovery, thereby allowing you to train more frequently and get better results faster!

BioPerine

BioPerine is the industry-standard black pepper extract frequently included in a wide variety of dietary supplements to improve the absorption and effectiveness of nutraceuticals. Piperine (the active component of BioPerine) does this by slowing the breakdown of certain nutrients in the body, which allows them to survive longer in the digestive tract and offer greater benefit.

Piperine is also known to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which may further help promote healthy joint function and joint comfort.

In fact, studies have demonstrated that a combination of turmeric + ginger + black pepper (all three of which are included in 1UP Joint Health Plus) may improve the prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels in patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis similar to common OTC options.[15]
